Western Maryland’s Garrett County houses Maryland’s only operating ski resort: Wisp. Just a few hour’s drive from southern Maryland, the resort has a relatively long season, offering both Thanksgiving weekend skiing and spring snow fun. In fact, Wisp is one of the latest-running ski resorts in the region, making it a destination spot for those chasing spring bluebird days. Moreover, with almost 100% snow making coverage, skiers and riders don’t have to worry about poor conditions or rocky outcrops.
Wisp offers 172 acres of ski terrain for all skiing and riding levels. Their 700-foot vertical drop is weighted toward beginner and intermediate skiers, but with 31% “advanced” terrain, adrenaline-seekers shouldn’t be too upset. 41% of Wisp’s terrain is ranked as “green,” beginner terrain which comprises the 1.5-mile-long Possum run. In addition to offering standard runs, the resort boasts several freestyle offerings: A Pro Terrain Park, a Super Pipe, a Rail Park, the Whip Saw Terrain Trail, and several Terrain Gardens and miniature parks throughout the mountain.
The 172 acres of terrain are accessible via two quad chairs and five triples, making sure you get up the mountain as fast as possible. Beginners can also appreciate the abundance of first-timer lifts; Wisp provides three carpets and four surface tows. What’s more—the mountain offers night skiing on over 90% of trails.
Are you the only member of your family who doesn’t enjoy a good day on the mountain? At Wisp, you won’t have to worry; the resort offers Canopy Tours, Segway Tours, Disc Golf, Tubing, sledding, and snowshoeing. Happen to be passing through during the summer months? Take advantage of the resort’s mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and flatwater kayaking opportunities.
